Most of the featured works have been generously donated to the museum’s collection by the artists; some have been presented in past exhibitions, while others are now being shown to the public for the first time. In an environment where glass is primarily valued for its historical significance, the skill of the hand, and the complexity of execution, contemporary artists are forging new ways to expand its boundaries beyond traditional roles. By approaching glass as both a sculptural medium and a conceptual entity, and manipulating it in diverse, often unexpected ways, these artists explore how glass can gain and retain meaning. Central to this exploration is the representation of the human body, with its forms, textures, and gestures, alongside the powerful rhythms and patterns of nature. Although divergent in content, themes, and intentions, the works on view invite us to mentally participate in the translation of abstract ideas into tangible forms, and vice versa. Ranging from figurative to abstract and from narrative to conceptual, the contemporary works balance strength and vulnerability, craftsmanship and poetic expression, introducing us into a realm of forms and metaphors in the unique language of glass. In Wuthering Heights he observes, questions, and perhaps even challenges the very possibility of representing reality. The featured works are made with and on aluminum: the paintings are rendered on aluminum surfaces, and aluminum tubes construct sculptures and other elements on display. The “cold” material, which enables optical interplay, conveys both alienation and violence, and Weinfeld’s images oscillate between poetic and formal. Aluminum does not absorb paint, thus the images depicted do not merge with the surface but remain as a substance on it, unless engraved in the aluminum, wounding the surface. The clear distinction between surface and image evokes the struggle to fix the image that preceded the invention of photography. Weinfeld uses the disunion of surface and image to probe modes of perception and gaze: he addresses the concrete—the material, the surface, and the fleeting nature of the image—what we think we have seen, understood, remembered. Portraits, objects such as a suspended veil or an inhaler, and systems of duplicated dissolving squares—all come together to form a stream of consciousness that touches on the disintegration of one’s private space, echoing the decline of the national home. The works also explore the relationship between the two-dimensional and three-dimensional, flatness and volume, as well as the mastery of the gaze, its direction and deflection.Haim Levanon 2
